EThekwini aims to finish water pipeline repairs by week's end

The eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal expects to complete repairs on a major burst water pipeline by the end of the week, restoring supply to affected areas. Mayor Cyril Xaba inspected the site and expressed confidence in the teams' progress.

The eThekwini Municipality has been working to fix a burst water pipeline that occurred last week, disrupting supply to several parts of the city. This pipeline normally delivers about 30 megalitres of water daily to the region.

Mayor Cyril Xaba visited the damaged site to assess the ongoing replacement work. He observed teams installing a new 120-millimetre pipe to address the issue. Affected areas include sections of the outer west, such as Inchanga and Shongweni, along with parts of Pinetown and Umhlanga, where residents have faced shortages.

Xaba voiced optimism about the timeline, stating: “So what you see today is a pipe replacement problem. It’s 120 millimetres of pipe that will be placed as we speak to deal with the problem. And the teams are on the ground and they’ve given me the completion date. I’m satisfied that looking at the amount of work that is being undertaken, you will meet the completion date. So that you can start seeing water flowing into the areas that are currently experiencing a short supply.”

The municipality anticipates full restoration soon, alleviating the current disruptions for thousands of residents in these communities.
