Ethiopian board allocates free airtime to independent candidates

Ethiopia's National Electoral Board has allocated free airtime to supporters of registered independent candidates for the 7th general election. The decision came during discussions with the candidates' representatives, board spokesperson Melat Werku Haylu said.

Addis Ababa, Miyazya 9, 2018 (EFM) – Ethiopia's National Electoral Board has granted free airtime slots to representatives of registered independent candidates ahead of the 7th general election.

Board spokesperson Melat Werku Haylu announced the allocation during a meeting with the candidates' supporters. She stated that pre-election activities are progressing according to the 7th general election schedule. The airtime provision forms part of preparatory efforts, with officials urging responsible and lawful use by recipients.

Under the allocation, a male independent candidate receives 15 minutes across one television, one radio, and one newspaper outlet. A female candidate gains free airtime on three media platforms, offering an additional opportunity to reach broader audiences.

If the female candidate is disabled, slots extend up to five. Similarly, a male disabled candidate gets free time on three outlets plus one extra chance.
