Fishers recover suspected rocket debris in Sulu

Fisherfolk have recovered debris believed to be from a rocket in waters off Barangay Suang Buna, Pangutaran, Sulu, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The recovery occurred on December 30, 2025, and the debris is currently under the custody of the barangay. The PCG did not specify the origin, though photos show markings resembling the Chinese flag.

In a statement, the PCG reported that fisherfolk recovered and towed the debris on December 30, 2025. “The recovered debris is currently under the custody of Barangay Suang Buna,” said the PCG Sub-Station Pangutaran.

The PCG is actively coordinating with barangay officials to facilitate the transfer of the debris for proper handling and disposition. The agency did not identify the country of origin of the debris, but photos posted on the PCG's social media pages showed markings resembling the flag of China.

As of posting time, the Chinese Embassy in Manila has yet to issue a statement on the matter. This incident occurs amid ongoing tensions in the South China Sea, though the PCG statement makes no direct connection.

Sulu is part of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, and Pangutaran is a coastal municipality. The recovery raises interest due to potential safety and international relations implications.

Chinese ships shadowed the Philippines' regular aid mission for fisherfolk off Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal on Friday in the West Philippine Sea, which a regional monitor called a 'new normal.' In a rare show of compassion, Chinese navy members assisted a distressed Filipino fisherman in the West Philippine Sea on Christmas Day. They provided bottled water and food to the man who had written a 'help me' sign on his small boat. While the fisherman expressed thanks, the Philippine Coast Guard questioned the Chinese vessel's presence in the area.

Nineteen technical wreck divers and a Remote Operated Vehicle from the Philippine Coast Guard have begun search operations for the 10 missing passengers of M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 off Baluk-Baluk Island in Hadji Muhtamad, Basilan. The vessel sank on January 26, resulting in 18 deaths and 316 survivors. Senator Raffy Tulfo condemned maritime regulators for negligence.

China summoned the Philippine ambassador in Beijing on January 22, 2026, to protest remarks by Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela on the West Philippine Sea. The Chinese Foreign Ministry demanded that Manila swiftly "undo the negative impact" of these statements. Tarriela responded that threats would not intimidate them and transparency would continue.

A joint SAR team located debris from the ATR 42-500 plane owned by Indonesia Air Transport in Mount Bulusaraung, on the border of Maros and Pangkep districts, South Sulawesi, on January 18, 2026. Philippine Coast Guard Commodore Jay Tarriela responded to the Chinese Embassy in Manila's diplomatic protest against his statements, calling it an attempt to divert attention from China's aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea. The protest stemmed from a presentation he made featuring satirical images of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Malacañang and the Department of Foreign Affairs have yet to respond.
