PAGASA raises Signal No. 1 for Basyang in eastern Mindanao

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has hoisted Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over parts of eastern Mindanao due to the approaching Tropical Depression Basyang. It is located 735 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and is expected to make landfall on Thursday or Friday. Residents are advised to prepare for possible heavy rains and strong winds.

On February 4, 2026, Tropical Depression Basyang continued moving westward over the Philippine Sea at 15 kilometers per hour. According to PAGASA, it was located 735 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, at 10 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h and gusts up to 70 km/h. It is expected to intensify into a tropical storm that day.

Signal No. 1 has been raised over Surigao del Sur, the eastern portion of Surigao del Norte (Claver, Gigaquit, Bacuag) including the Siargao-Bucas Grande Islands, indicating strong winds and rains within 36 hours. Signal No. 2 is possible. First landfall is forecast in eastern Mindanao on Thursday evening, February 5, or Friday morning, February 6. Afterward, it will weaken and cross northeastern Mindanao, Central Visayas, and Western Visayas before emerging over the Sulu Sea on Saturday morning, February 7, and crossing northern Palawan in the afternoon or evening. It will likely become a low pressure area by Sunday, February 8.

PAGASA Administrator Nathaniel Servando said in a press conference, “Preparing early is key to the safety of our fellow Filipinos. Being alert and immediately following local government instructions will greatly help us avoid hazards that can affect lives and property.”

Basyang's trough is already bringing scattered rains to Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Davao Region, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, and Sarangani. Moderate to heavy rain (50-100 mm) is expected in Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental from February 4 to 5. Heavy to intense rain (100-200 mm) in Southern Leyte, Bohol, and others from February 5 to 6, and in Aklan and Antique from February 6 to 7. Floods and landslides are possible.

Additionally, the northeast monsoon is bringing strong winds to most of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Very rough seas up to 5 meters are forecast in the seaboard of Surigao del Sur and eastern Siargao. This is the Philippines' second tropical cyclone of 2026 after Tropical Storm Ada.
