Four teenagers aged 16 to 18 lost their lives on Saturday around 6:30 p.m. on the D80 departmental road in Mairy-sur-Marne, Marne. Their car slammed into a tree, and all occupants died at the scene, according to firefighters and the Châlons-en-Champagne prosecutor's office.
The driver, 17 years old, held a valid driver's license, the prosecutor's office specified. The victims hailed from nearby Aulnay-l’Aître, per the Marne prefecture. The vehicle was traveling alone on the road at the time of the crash.
“It is a dramatic accident whose causes remain, at this stage, to be determined. It involves understanding what may have caused the vehicle to leave the road,” the prosecutor's office told AFP. An investigation into the causes of death has been opened and assigned to the Châlons-en-Champagne gendarmerie.
