The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission announced on Thursday that the deadline to register cell phone lines will be extended beyond June 30. The new schedule sets dates between August 15 and December 31, 2026, depending on the last digit of the number.
So far, 63 million lines have completed registration, while about 80 million remain pending. Postpaid lines do not require an additional process because they are already linked to an identity.
The government aims to eliminate anonymity in prepaid lines to combat extortion and fraud. President Claudia Sheinbaum defended the measure and rejected claims that it is a spying mechanism.
If a line is not registered on time, the company may suspend service after 72 hours, although emergency calls and seismic alerts will remain available.
