GS1 US Launches Guidance for EPR Packaging Reporting

GS1 US has introduced new standards to help companies manage data for extended producer responsibility laws on packaging. The guidance aims to streamline reporting across states with EPR rules. It leverages existing barcode identifiers already used in supply chains.

The nonprofit organization released its Guidance for Extended Producer Responsibility Packaging Requirements on July 10. The document provides a standardized way for producers to organize packaging information using Global Trade Item Numbers and Global Location Numbers.

Seven states have enacted EPR packaging laws, including California, Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington. Producers must register with a Producer Responsibility Organization in each state and report details on packaging materials, weights, and recyclability to determine fees.

Michelle Covey, vice president of customer success at GS1 US, said the guideline helps organizations meet regulatory requirements more efficiently while supporting sustainability goals. Oregon began collecting producer fees in July 2025, and Colorado required registrations by the same date.

Maine's program starts in 2026, while California requires producer registration by January 2027. The standards target complex packaging sectors such as healthcare, foodservice, and apparel.
