HBO renews Steve Carell's 'Rooster' for season 2

HBO has renewed the Steve Carell comedy 'Rooster' for a second season midway through its first run. The series, created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, continues airing Sundays at 10 p.m. through May 10. Executives praised the show's reception and ensemble cast.

HBO announced the renewal of 'Rooster' as its freshman season progresses. The pickup comes after the series premiered on March 8, with episodes still airing weekly on Sundays at 10 p.m. until May 10. As TVLine first learned, the decision reflects strong early audience support for the comedy. Amy Gravitt, HBO's executive vice president of programming and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy series, said: 'It's been heartening to feel the audience embrace 'Rooster,' as we did when we first saw Steve, Bill and Matt bring this character to life. Along with our partners at WBTV and Doozer, we're looking forward to seeing what Ludlow's spring semester has in store for this incredible comedy ensemble.' Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs at Warner Bros. Television, added: ''Rooster' is a heartfelt, endearing series, and its second-season renewal is richly deserved. Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses are masters of their craft, bringing their signature heart and humor to life through an incredible cast led by Steve Carell. We're thrilled to continue this creative journey with HBO and Doozer.' Steve Carell stars as Greg Russo, an author who takes a job as writer-in-residence at the university where his daughter Katie (Charly Clive) teaches alongside her soon-to-be ex-husband Archie (Phil Dunster). The cast also includes Danielle Deadwyler as Professor Dylan Shepard, John C. McGinley as university president Walter Mann, and Lauren Tsai as Sunny. Recurring roles feature Annie Mumolo, Maximo Salas, Alan Ruck, Rory Scovel, and Connie Britton. Bill Lawrence expressed gratitude, stating: 'We are so grateful to Warner Bros. Television and HBO for being such great partners, and to Casey Bloys, Amy Gravitt, and Channing Dungey for giving us the opportunity to keep making this show with Steve and our amazing cast.' Lawrence, Tarses, and Carell executive-produce alongside others including Jeff Ingold and Jonathan Krisel.
