IEC warns against misinformation ahead of local elections

The Independent Electoral Commission has expressed concern over ongoing misinformation about its election management and has urged political leaders to avoid false statements that could harm the integrity of the upcoming local government polls.

The Independent Electoral Commission has voiced worries about persistent false claims circulating on social media regarding how it runs elections.

It specifically cautioned party leaders against making inaccurate remarks that might weaken trust in the 4 November local government elections. The commission has already held meetings with stakeholders in KwaZulu-Natal to prepare for the vote.

Provincial Electoral Officer Ntombifuthi Masinga highlighted efforts to educate the public and counter misinformation. She stressed the built-in transparency of the system.

“One thing that people have to know is that you can go to the IEC website and see results down to the voting station level. If you had a party agent at the voting station and they took a picture of the voting slip, they can even go there and check whether the results on that result slip matches the results on our system,” Masinga said.
