Impa Tech enrollments close on Tuesday, December 23

The Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa) has extended enrollments for its undergraduate program in mathematics for technology and innovation until noon on December 23. Up to 100 spots are available in Rio de Janeiro for 2026, prioritizing science olympiad medalists and Enem participants.

The Impa Tech selection process, an initiative of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics, aims to fill up to 100 spots for the in-person bachelor's degree in mathematics for technology and innovation, with classes starting in 2026 at the Porto Maravalley campus in Rio de Janeiro's port area. Free online enrollments via the institute's website are open until noon on December 23, Brasília time.

Eligible applicants include those who have completed high school or are in their final year, provided they prove completion upon summons. Candidates must select one entry path: up to 80 spots for science olympiad medalists from events like OBMEP national level 3, OBM level 3, OBFEP levels B or C, and Brazilian olympiads in chemistry and informatics; or up to 20 via Enem, using scores from 2023, 2024, or 2025 editions, based on the highest math score.

The process features two stages. The first assesses academic performance by summing medal points or Enem math scores. The second, online and synchronous, evaluates skills like tenacity, collaboration, and communication through virtual interviews and group dynamics. The final score combines both phases.

Quota reservations apply within each path, for public high school attendees, self-declared Black, Brown, Indigenous, quilombola individuals, people with disabilities, and female candidates (cis or trans). The program receives support from the Ministry of Education (MEC), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), and Rio de Janeiro City Hall, plus potential financial aid for selectees, contingent on government funding. The 2026 class will be the project's second, geared toward professional training in the tech market.

The first day of Enem 2025, held on November 9, recorded a 27% abstention rate, similar to 2024. Over 4.8 million students registered, with 3,240 eliminations for irregularities. The essay theme was "Perspectives on aging in Brazilian society".

An open letter published on International Day of Education urges South African scientists to actively engage with students to improve stagnant STEM marks, despite a record-high matric pass rate of 88%. The piece highlights declining maths and physics performance and calls for visibility and storytelling to inspire future innovators.

The Enem reaplication, held on December 16 and 17, 2025, featured at least two questions with logical structures identical to those in study materials attributed to medical student Edcley Teixeira. The Inep released the test booklet on December 23, and Folha identified similarities in math and combinatorics problems. Edcley denies any leak, crediting the matches to analysis of exam patterns.

Achieving a bachelor’s pass in South Africa’s National Senior Certificate exams marks a minimum threshold but does not ensure entry into university programmes. Universities rely on a more competitive Admission Point Score system, leaving thousands of qualified matriculants without spaces. Alternative pathways exist for those who fall short.

Starting this Friday, December 19, parents in the Metropolitan Region can apply for out-of-term vacancies for the 2026 school year via the Anótate en la lista system. The process opens at 9:00 a.m. on the Ministry of Education's website, allowing applications to at least six schools with available spots.

As South African schools prepare to reopen on 14 January 2026, nearly 5,000 Grade 1 and 8 pupils in Gauteng remain unplaced due to glitches in the online admissions system and district overloads. Frustrated parents are queuing at offices and calling for the system's scrapping, while the department promises ongoing placements. The issue echoes national challenges in school admissions.
