Indian pharma stocks decline after Trump tariff announcement

Indian drug shares fell Wednesday after US President Donald Trump announced plans for 100 percent tariffs on generic drugs. The move targets companies with heavy exposure to the US market.

The Nifty Pharma index dropped notably while the broader Nifty 50 also declined. Analysts advised investors to shift focus toward domestically oriented Indian pharmaceutical firms.

The proposed tariffs are expected to affect major players including Lupin, Aurobindo Pharma, Piramal Pharma, Ajanta Pharma and Alembic Pharmaceuticals. Negotiations remain likely because India supplies affordable medicines to the US.

Market observers noted that the announcement has already prompted a reassessment of revenue risks for export-heavy drug makers.

Indian stock markets recorded their steepest single-day decline in nearly a month. The drop followed a worldwide selloff in technology shares and concerns over possible US interest rate moves.
