Inquiry probes occupation of USP reitoria

São Paulo Civil Police opened an inquiry into the occupation of the University of São Paulo reitoria by striking students. The action lasted three days last week and ended with a Military Police operation.

The inquiry was opened at the 93rd Police District. Students occupied the building from Thursday the 7th after protests outside the reitoria. The clearance took place in the early hours of Sunday the 11th, involving tear gas and a police baton corridor.

The Public Security Secretariat classified the case as damage to public property, a crime under Article 163 of the Penal Code. Seized personal items such as notebooks and cellphones were sent for forensic analysis. The office said it will request phone record access to identify those involved in possible crimes.

USP stated it had not been informed in advance about the operation and expressed regret over the violence. Students reported at least five injured, while the SSP denies injuries and says it will investigate any excesses. Governor Tarcísio de Freitas backed the police action.
