Chilean health insurers closed the first quarter of 2026 with joint profits of $34.092 billion, reversing the $273 million loss from the same period in 2025. The 23% reduction in medical leave subsidy payments largely explains the positive result.

According to the Superintendencia de Salud, total revenues reached $1.120.412 billion between January and March. Spending on medical leave subsidies fell from $193.613 million to $148.549 million, a decrease of more than $45 billion on an annual basis.

The agency attributed the drop to the deterrent effect of investigations by the Contraloría General de la República since May 2025 and to oversight measures by the Superintendencia de Seguridad Social. Consalud led the gains with $18.040 million, followed by Cruz Blanca with $6.782 million and Banmédica with $3.918 million.

The Superintendencia warned that profits cannot be distributed as dividends until the debt to affiliates for excessive charges is settled, with a deadline of up to 14 years. The first months of the year usually record lower health costs, so a full annual balance is required for a definitive evaluation.
