Jos Verstappen: Max and I knew of, supported Lambiase's McLaren move

Jos Verstappen has revealed that he and Max were aware in advance of Gianpiero Lambiase's decision to leave Red Bull for McLaren in 2028 as chief racing officer—a move they encouraged. This follows last week's announcement of the hire.

In an interview with RaceXpress, Jos Verstappen disclosed that he and his son Max had prior knowledge of Gianpiero Lambiase's planned departure from Red Bull, where he serves as Max's race engineer and head of racing. Lambiase will join McLaren as chief racing officer starting in 2028 after his contract expires, as announced last week.

'We knew for a while, and we also knew when it was going to happen,' Jos said. 'It's a huge opportunity for him, so we understand. We also told him to do it and grab it with both hands. Beyond that, it's up to Red Bull to replace him. We will see.'

The elder Verstappen noted they have another year and a half to two years working together. Reflecting on their close partnership since 2016—which contributed to Max's four drivers' titles from 2021-2024—Jos highlighted the family's full support.

In 2021, Max told Ziggo Sport he would only work with Lambiase: 'I have said to him I only work with him. As soon as he stops, I stop too.' He praised their dynamic: 'Of course, we can be pretty strict with each other sometimes, but I want that too. He has to tell me when I'm being a jerk and I have to tell him.'

Max remains contracted to Red Bull until end-2028 and has voiced concerns over 2026 regulations, potentially eyeing an exit if unenjoyable.
