Julio Le Parc, Argentine kinetic art pioneer, dies at 97

Julio Le Parc died on Saturday in Paris at age 97. The Argentine artist, known for his experiments with light, color and movement, was a leading figure in kinetic art.

Le Parc was born in 1928 in Palmira, Mendoza, and settled in France in 1958. His work formed part of the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel and explored visual perception through simple mechanisms.

He received the Grand International Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1966. His pieces were shown at institutions such as the Palais de Tokyo, the Met Breuer and the Pérez Art Museum Miami.

The death comes as he had a planned exhibition at Tate Modern on June 11. Le Parc maintained ties with Argentina throughout his life, including the sphere “Sol” at Ezeiza International Airport.
