L7 bassist Jennifer Finch dies at 59

Jennifer Finch, the longtime bassist for the grunge band L7, died Saturday at age 59 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.

L7 confirmed the news in an Instagram post, describing Finch as a “beloved bandmate, friend, and fellow troublemaker.” The band issued a longer statement calling her a “true original who lived entirely on her own terms” and noting that her “fierce spirit, humor and boundless creativity helped shape L7.”

Finch was first diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011. She learned of the brain cancer diagnosis earlier this month and initially expected radiation treatment, but complications led to multiple surgeries and extensive medical care. Bandmates launched a GoFundMe to help cover costs.

Finch joined L7 in 1986 after playing in earlier groups including Sugar Babydoll and the Pandoras. She performed on the band’s first four albums and returned for their 2015 reunion. L7’s planned Last Hurrah farewell tour this fall will proceed without her, as she had requested.
