Labor unions plan national day of action against 6x1 work schedule

Labor unions are promoting popular mobilization on May 24 and 25 against the 6x1 work schedule. The action includes protests in all state capitals and aims to pressure lawmakers ahead of a vote in Congress.

Labor unions began mobilizations last Friday with plenaries, state hearings and pamphleting in high-traffic areas. They advocate an immediate reduction in working hours to include two weekly rest days without any salary cut.

The National Day of Struggle will take place next Sunday, May 24, in all state capitals. In São Paulo the protest is set for May 25 on Avenida Paulista because of the Virada Cultural event.

In the Chamber of Deputies, rapporteur Léo Prates is expected to present the final text this week, with a vote scheduled for May 26. House president Hugo Motta has assured that the proposal will be voted on by the end of May. On May 27 the unions will take the issue directly to workers at their workplaces.

The unions also plan a massive presence in Brasília on voting days, occupying committee rooms and the plenary gallery.
