A driver veered into the water in Filipstad on Thursday afternoon, prompting a major rescue operation. The person was pulled from the water after several hours due to the strong currents. The injury status remains unknown.
On Thursday afternoon, police, ambulance, and rescue services were alerted to Munkeberg in central Filipstad after a car drove into the water. The incident occurred just after 5 p.m., with one person inside the vehicle. The car became stuck under dam locks and began sinking in the fast-flowing water, complicating the rescue efforts.
"It is a serious accident," says police spokesperson Sophia Jiglind. Rescue services deemed the environment too dangerous for personnel to enter, so a crane truck was called to free the car. Technicians attempted to open and close the locks, but initially without success.
The operation lasted over three hours. Just before 8:30 p.m., rescue services managed to dislodge the car and the person, who was brought to land by 9 p.m. Police have set up cordons to investigate undisturbed.
"It has been a complicated rescue operation. The water is very, very fast-flowing," says the police spokesperson. According to Jiglind, the car appears to have gone straight in a curve without turning, but the exact circumstances are still under investigation. There is no suspicion of crime.
