Residents in Meadowlands, Soweto, patrol their streets in groups of 30 to 40 after years of inadequate police and municipal response. They carry torches and two-way radios during day and night shifts. The effort is led by Put Patrollers First, founded in June 2024.
Collen Makgopela, 56, established Put Patrollers First after leaving the local Community Policing Forum. The network now operates multiple branches across Gauteng and works alongside SAPS. Volunteers fund their own equipment and receive no pay.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia confirmed on 22 June that R600-million meant for police stations and community policing was redirected to security operations before 30 June marches. Patrollers say this funding could have supported their work.
Makgopela and other volunteers describe friction with ward councillors who they say take credit for arrests. They also report exhaustion and personal risks, including lost members. The group seeks formal recognition and a base from the municipality.
