Meta releases optimistic AI ad using Bowie song

Meta published a new advertising campaign on July 23 that promotes an upbeat vision for artificial intelligence. The one-minute video downplays specific AI tools while featuring generic scenes and a David Bowie track about the end of the world.

The ad, posted to Meta's Instagram account, states that AI will not "make us less connected" or "leave us behind." It includes brief shots of the Muse Spark model and the Meta AI interface but focuses mainly on crowds, dancing couples, and social media apps.

Mark Zuckerberg wrote that the effort aims to show "the future is for everyone" and to counter "AI doomers." Chief Marketing Officer Denise Moreno added that the company believes AI will empower people rather than reduce connection or agency.

The campaign also highlights Meta's smart glasses, including Oakley frames and a Kylie Jenner-branded version. The David Bowie song "Five Years" plays throughout, with lyrics referencing a dying Earth.

Meta has faced separate criticism over recent staff cuts justified by AI productivity gains and a lawsuit from publishers alleging unauthorized use of copyrighted material to train AI systems.
