Microsoft Paint introduces AI-generated coloring books

Microsoft has rolled out a new AI feature in Paint that lets users create coloring book pages from text prompts. The tool is currently available only to Windows Insiders on Copilot+ PCs. This update aims to demonstrate practical applications of AI in everyday software.

Microsoft Paint, the long-standing drawing app, now includes an AI-powered tool for generating coloring book images. Users can enter a text prompt, such as "a cute fluffy cat on a donut," and the AI will produce a set of varied black-and-white line art options suitable for coloring. Once selected, the image can be added to the canvas, copied, saved, or printed, potentially for children's activities.

This feature is part of a broader update exclusive to Windows Insiders using Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has emphasized that AI must prove its value for long-term adoption, and this innovation highlights one such real-world use. Alongside the coloring book tool, Paint gains a fill tolerance slider, allowing finer control over how the Fill tool applies color to areas.

The updates extend beyond Paint. In Notepad, enhancements to the Write, Rewrite, and Summarize functions, powered by GPT integration, now deliver faster results. Users can interact with previews without waiting for complete outputs, though a Microsoft account is required for cloud-based features. These improvements are initially accessible to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels on Windows 11.

The rollout underscores Microsoft's push to embed AI into familiar tools, making advanced capabilities more accessible while testing them in controlled environments.

Microsoft has announced a series of generative AI features for Windows 11, aiming to transform every PC into an 'AI PC' through voice activation, screen analysis, and automated file handling. These updates, including the 'Hey, Copilot' voice command and worldwide rollout of Copilot Vision, build on the company's agentic AI focus. The features emphasize natural user interactions while addressing past privacy concerns from tools like Recall.

Adobe has integrated several generative AI features into Photoshop, powered by its Firefly model, to streamline image creation and editing tasks. These tools, accessible on desktop, web, and mobile, aim to assist beginners and save time on projects. Users must agree to Adobe's AI terms of service before accessing them.

The tool is now available globally in the Gemini app, though with usage limits for free users. It also includes enhanced features for detecting AI-generated content.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has announced that creators will soon be able to produce Shorts using AI-generated versions of themselves. This move aims to enhance creative tools while addressing concerns over deepfakes and low-quality AI content. The platform views AI as a means of expression rather than a substitute for human creativity.
