Murang'a governor's driver shot during Nyahururu rally clashes

Governor Irungu Kang'ata alleged that his driver Gitari was shot in the chest amid clashes at a Linda Mwananchi Group rally in Nyahururu on July 12. The incident occurred after the governor's convoy was confronted while attending a church service.

Governor Irungu Kang'ata said his group was first stoned while in church at the AIPCA Nyahururu Cathedral. He claimed his vehicle was blocked and confiscated before a confrontation between his driver and persons believed to be police officers.

"We were first stoned while in church. My vehicle was blocked and confiscated. My driver was injured by police. He has a bullet lodged on his chest," Kang'ata alleged. It remains unclear whether the injury was caused by a rubber bullet or live ammunition.

Other leaders including Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi and Suba South MP Caroli Omondi were forced to abandon the rally after scuffles between warring factions. Kang'ata appealed for calm among supporters.

A similar incident occurred almost simultaneously in Kisumu County, where armed youths targeted a parallel Linda Mwananchi church service and police used tear gas.
