The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has threatened an indefinite strike at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital over the failure to restore call meals for resident doctors.
The association issued the warning in a statement signed by its president, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, secretary-general Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and publicity secretary Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim. It accused LUTH management of ignoring complaints and a formal ultimatum sent earlier this month.
The dispute dates back to resolutions at NARD's May Ordinary General Meeting in Kano. In a letter dated June 8, 2026, the group notified the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare that LUTH had three weeks from June 6 to restore the meals or face action. The hospital has not acted, the statement said.
NARD described the denial of meals during prolonged shifts as insensitive and harmful to staff welfare and patient care. It noted the Association of Resident Doctors at LUTH held an emergency congress on June 17 and voted to join the planned strike if the issue is not resolved.
The group urged the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare to intervene and warned against any victimisation of doctors involved in the union activities.
