Kyrgios, 31, last won a singles match in March 2025 before limited appearances due to injuries. His most recent prior singles outing came in Brisbane in January 2026. In the post-match interview he said he felt great and motivated after a wrist reconstruction and four knee surgeries. “I’m back mostly because of the fans,” he added. “I’m staying for you guys.” The victory at Tennis Club Weissenhof marked his first singles success since October 2022 when he reached the Wimbledon final. Kyrgios remains unranked and will next play Sho Shimabukuro in the second round on Thursday. He is scheduled to compete in doubles on Wednesday alongside Alexander Bublik. Kyrgios expressed caution about his future on tour and declined to make firm commitments. He noted ongoing uncertainty over his physical condition and self-doubt during his time away.
