Parliament abolishes food requirement for alcohol licenses

The Swedish parliament has decided to remove the requirement for food service at venues selling alcohol. From this summer, restaurants and bars can obtain serving permits without offering meals.

The decision means that bar owners across the country no longer need a kitchen to obtain a permit to serve alcohol. The law will come into effect during the summer.

Benny Astor, who runs House of Blues in Borlänge, is not entirely impressed by the change. He views the new law as one that will soon take effect.

Carina Höglund, who runs Stjärnsunds bistro and café, is instead satisfied with the outcome so far. She welcomes the opportunity to focus on alcohol sales.
