Residents complain of moldy smell in Sabesp water

Residents in Campinas region cities, including Limeira, Paulínia, Hortolândia and Monte Mor, report bad smell and taste in Sabesp-supplied water over recent days. Complaints include a strong moldy odor affecting consumption and daily tasks. The company states the water remains safe for use.

Residents across several cities in the Campinas region have filed complaints about the quality of water supplied by Sabesp. The issues center on a strong smell, unusual taste, and moldy odor noticed mainly in recent days.

Entrepreneur Adriane Silva from Limeira's Vista Alegre neighborhood said the smell had changed days ago and intensified on April 22. "The water's smell has been different for some days, but on Wednesday (22/4), I felt it even stronger," she told reporters. Other neighbors reported similar issues.

In Paulínia, architect Mayara Bertussi from Serra Azul neighborhood described a "very strong mold smell" for about a week. "The drinking water also tastes moldy," she added, noting that washed clothes retain the odor. She contacted Sabesp via Instagram, and the company opened a ticket to investigate.

Dozens of comments on Sabesp's social media from Hortolândia and Monte Mor echo the complaints. In a statement, the company, privatized in July 2024, said variations in smell and taste do not affect water safety, and all reported cases are being checked on-site.
