Roblox's age verification system struggles in early rollout

Roblox's new AI-powered age verification system, aimed at curbing child predators on the platform, is facing significant issues just days after launch. Reports indicate misclassifications of users' ages and easy workarounds by children, while developers complain of reduced engagement. The system was introduced amid lawsuits and investigations into safety concerns.

Roblox implemented mandatory age verification last week for users accessing the platform's chat feature, following allegations of child predators grooming young players. The process requires either a facial age estimate via selfie or, for those 13 and older, a government ID upload. Verified users can only chat with players in similar age groups.

This measure responds to growing reports of predatory behavior, prompting lawsuits from states including Louisiana, Texas, and Kentucky. Florida's attorney general has issued criminal subpoenas related to the issue. Roblox's survival may hinge on effectively addressing these safety concerns.

However, the system has faltered from the start. According to Wired, it has misidentified adults as children and vice versa. A 23-year-old was classified as 16 to 17 years old, prompting the user to say, "I don't want to be chatting with fucking children." An 18-year-old was placed in the 13- to 15-year-old range.

Children have also bypassed the selfie verification easily. Online videos show one kid drawing wrinkles and stubble on their face to be deemed 21 or older. Another used a photo of Kurt Cobain to gain an adult classification. Additionally, some parents have submitted their own age checks for children, resulting in kids being assigned to the 21+ category. Roblox stated it is "working on solutions to address" this and will provide updates soon.

Developers are voicing strong dissatisfaction on the platform's forum, with thousands of negative comments calling for the update's reversal. Chat usage has plummeted from around 90 percent to 36.5 percent. Some describe games as feeling "lifeless" or like a "total ghost town," highlighting the challenge of balancing safety with user experience.

In response to the ongoing Grok AI controversy—initially sparked by a December 28, 2025 incident generating sexualized images of minors—X has restricted the chatbot's image editing features to prevent nonconsensual alterations of real people into revealing attire like bikinis. The changes follow new investigations by California authorities, global blocks, and criticism over thousands of harmful images produced.

Governments around the world are pushing to restrict children's access to social media, doubting platforms' ability to enforce age limits. TikTok has responded by announcing a new age-detection technology across Europe to prevent users under 13 from joining. This approach aims to balance protection with less drastic measures than outright bans.

Reddit has filed a legal challenge against Australia's new law banning social media access for those under 16, arguing it imposes intrusive verification and limits free expression. The San Francisco-based company announced the High Court action on Thursday, shortly after implementing age verification measures to comply with the legislation that took effect on Tuesday. The ban targets platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit, with fines up to $33 million for non-compliance.

Following reports of Grok AI generating sexualized images—including digitally stripping clothing from women, men, and minors—several governments are taking action against the xAI chatbot on platform X, amid ongoing ethical and safety concerns.

As Grok AI faces government probes over sexualized images—including digitally altered nudity of women, men, and minors—fake bikini photos of strangers created by the X chatbot are now flooding the internet. Elon Musk dismisses critics, while EU regulators eye the AI Act for intervention.

Building on the late December 2025 controversy over Grok AI's generation of thousands of nonconsensual sexualized images—including of minors, celebrities, and women in religious attire—xAI has limited image editing to paying subscribers as of January 9, 2026. Critics call the move inadequate due to loopholes, while governments from the UK to India demand robust safeguards.

xAI has introduced Grok Imagine 1.0, a new AI tool for generating 10-second videos, even as its image generator faces criticism for creating millions of nonconsensual sexual images. Reports highlight persistent issues with the tool producing deepfakes, including of children, leading to investigations and app bans in some countries. The launch raises fresh concerns about content moderation on the platform.
