George Russell lost a potential podium finish in the Monaco Grand Prix after a series of penalties stemming from a faulty timing system in the pit lane. The incident left the Mercedes driver with zero points from the race, while Pierre Gasly regained his podium position following a review. Mercedes is now exploring legal options over the outcome.
Russell received a five-second penalty for exceeding the pit lane speed limit by just 0.1 km/h, an issue that affected multiple drivers due to incorrectly configured timing loops. During a safety car period triggered by Lance Stroll's crash, Russell attempted to serve the penalty but stopped in the pit box against team instructions, leading to an additional drive-through penalty.
The drive-through dropped Russell outside the top 10 after the final restart. Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin explained that the team had calculated Russell would not stay ahead of Isack Hadjar if he pitted and had instructed him to stay out.
Russell later reflected on the setbacks, saying he watched documentaries on Rafa Nadal and Ronaldinho for perspective and adding, "I'll come through." The lost points widened his deficit to teammate Kimi Antonelli in the championship standings.
McLaren and Red Bull are weighing appeals against Gasly's amended result, while Alpine managing director Steve Nielsen noted suspicions about the timing system had arisen earlier in the weekend.
