George Russell reduced Kimi Antonelli's Formula 1 Drivers' Championship lead to 25 points after both Mercedes drivers encountered misfortune at the British Grand Prix.
Russell finished second at Silverstone while Antonelli ended outside the points. Antonelli suffered a broken wheel shield late in the race, made two pit stops, received a five-second penalty for track limits, and crossed the line behind the safety car.
Russell overcame a slow puncture to climb to second place. He gained 18 points on his teammate in the process.
Russell said the gap reflects performance levels so far. "He has done a better job than me this year to this point, so he deserves to be ahead of me," he said. "Whether the luck has balanced out or not, I'm not sure."
The British driver also referenced earlier setbacks, including a drive-through penalty in Monaco that cost him 15 points.
