Mercedes driver George Russell has described his challenge of matching teammate Kimi Antonelli's pace in the 2026 Formula 1 season as akin to replicating the Mona Lisa.
Russell spoke after the British Grand Prix, where he again trailed his 19-year-old teammate. Antonelli leads the drivers' standings after winning five consecutive races.
The Italian holds a 7-6 qualifying edge over Russell, with an average gap of 0.084 seconds in Q3. Russell attributed his inconsistency to the new car regulations, which require him to alter a driving style that had worked for two decades.
"It's like if somebody asked you to draw the Mona Lisa and you've got the Mona Lisa next to you, do you think you could achieve it straight away?" Russell said. He noted that data clearly shows the required adjustments, but achieving them consistently remains difficult.
Russell also cited bad luck, including an electrical failure while leading in Montreal and a pitlane penalty in Monaco.
