Sony raises PS5 prices amid economic pressures starting April 2

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced significant price increases for the PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, effective April 2. The company cited continued pressures in the global economic landscape as the reason. Prices are rising in multiple regions including the US, UK, Europe, and Japan.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's vice president of global marketing, Isabelle Tomatis, shared the news on the PlayStation Blog on March 27. She stated, 'With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we've made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.' The changes follow a previous increase in August 2025 and come amid rising component costs, particularly for memory and storage driven by AI infrastructure demand, as well as global economic factors including tariffs and inflation from geopolitical tensions such as the war in the Middle East. Valve recently delayed its Steam Machines due to similar shortages, initially planned for the first quarter of 2026 but now pushed to later in the first half. In the UK, the base PS5 rises from £479.99 to £569.99, the Digital Edition from £429.99 to £519.99, the PS5 Pro from £699.99 to £789.99, and the PlayStation Portal from £199.99 to £219.99. Comparable hikes apply in the US—with the PS5 Pro reaching around $900—the EU, and Japan. Piers Harding-Rolls, research director at Ampere Analysis, told Eurogamer that the increases stem from ended price protections on components, predicting Microsoft and Nintendo may follow suit. 'It wouldn’t be a surprise if Microsoft and Nintendo followed suit in the not-too-distant future,' he said. Chris Dring of The Game Business expressed concern over the impact on hardware sales and new player acquisition ahead of major releases like Grand Theft Auto 6, expected in November. The PS5 launched in 2020, with the Pro following in 2024.

Watu wanasema nini

X discussions highlight shock and frustration over Sony's PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal price increases effective April 2, attributed to global economic pressures including AI-driven component costs. Users express negative sentiments, labeling it greedy or insane, urge buying before the hike, and speculate on higher PS6 prices. Retailers like GameStop promote pre-hike purchases and trades. Some defend as necessary due to inflation, while others blame politics or compare favorably to Xbox.

US sales of the PlayStation 5 nearly doubled in the week ending April 4, marking the console's best performance of 2026 so far. Consumers rushed to buy before Sony's announced price increases took effect. The surge came after Sony cited global economic pressures for raising prices by about $100 on its PS5 models.

The Nex Playground movement-based gaming console will increase in price by $50 to $299 starting April 1. Nex co-founder and CEO David Lee announced the change in a letter to customers, blaming rising production costs for components like memory and storage. The company's Play Pass subscription remains $89 per year.
