Survey finds 90 per cent of music fans value authenticity most

A new study of 9,000 music fans across nine countries shows that authenticity is the top factor for connecting with artists. The research was conducted by Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky in partnership with COLORSxSTUDIOS.

Ninety per cent of respondents said authenticity is the most important element in building a connection with musicians. Eighty-four per cent added that unexpected and unscripted moments create the most lasting memories, while 60 per cent pointed to live performances as the strongest form of engagement. One in three said they feel inspired to be themselves after seeing artists perform authentically.

Deezer disclosed on May 4 that 44 percent of all songs uploaded to its platform—around 75,000 daily—are AI-generated, up sharply from 10 percent in January and 28 percent last September. Despite this surge, the tracks account for just 1-3 percent of listening time, thanks to detection tools that flag 85 percent for demonetization and exclude them from recommendations.

A landmark report reveals that Black music has contributed 80 percent and £24.5 billion to the UK music market over 30 years from 1994 to 2023. Commissioned by UK Music and initiated by its Diversity Taskforce, the study highlights ongoing disparities in pay, contracts, and representation for Black artists and professionals. It urges industry action through eight specific recommendations.
