TaylorMade fitter optimizes Qi4D driver for Golf.com director

Adrian Rietveld, the TaylorMade fitter who works with pros like Rory McIlroy, conducted a detailed session to customize the new Qi4D driver for Johnny Wunder, Golf.com's director of equipment. The fitting focused on matching the club's technology to Wunder's swing without altering his ingrained habits. Results showed improved consistency and eliminated his typical miss.

Adrian Rietveld, TaylorMade's senior manager for PGA Tour fittings and the personal fitter for players including Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Tommy Fleetwood, recently worked with Johnny Wunder on selecting the optimal setup for the TaylorMade Qi4D driver. In his post-fitting notes, Rietveld described Wunder as an athletic golfer with years of experience and consistent swing repeatability, allowing for precise equipment adjustments.

During the session at The Kingdom, TaylorMade's facility, Rietveld avoided technical instructions beyond basic tee height advice. Instead, he optimized the club to counter Wunder's one-directional miss, a common issue for many players. By leveraging the Qi4D's exceptional spin-rate consistency across the face, Rietveld increased loft without risking excessive spin, a departure from Wunder's previous low-loft drivers designed to suppress spin.

Key adjustments included subtle changes to lie angle, face angle, and center-of-gravity location, while preserving familiar elements like grip, length, and swing weight. The final configuration features the TaylorMade Qi4D Core head at 8 degrees loft, with weights set as 2X 9g back and 2X 5g forward, the FCT sleeve upright at a 61-degree lie angle, and a D4 swing weight. It pairs with a Fujikura Ventus Black Velo+ 6X shaft tipped 5/8 inch at 45.25 inches, and a Golf Pride Tour Velvet 58R grip with double side sadle.

TrackMan data from the fitting recorded an average swing speed of 110.2 mph, ball speed of 163.7 mph, launch angle of 11.3 degrees, spin rate of 2396 RPM, and a smash factor of 1.48. Rietveld noted that these outcomes exceeded expectations, providing multiple viable options and building Wunder's confidence. Wunder plans to test the setup at the Battle at The Beach tournament at Hammock Beach in Florida this weekend.
