Wimbledon champion urges Cobolli to challenge ATP doubles overhaul

Wimbledon doubles champion Henry Patten has asked Italian singles player Flavio Cobolli to speak out against the ATP’s proposed changes to doubles events. The plan, known as Product 28, would halve doubles draws starting in 2028 and shift prize money further toward singles players. Patten said Cobolli expressed willingness to voice support if asked.

Patten made the comments during an episode of the Changeover Podcast. He noted that he had spoken with several top singles players at Wimbledon, and that Cobolli and Felix Auger-Aliassime were the most supportive.

The ATP proposal would reduce doubles draws at Masters events from 32 teams to 16. Draws at 500 and 250 tournaments would drop from 16 teams to eight. The current 80-20 prize money split between singles and doubles would move to 90-10.

Bob Bryan also criticized the plan during Wimbledon. He said it would block young and college players from pursuing doubles careers. Patten separately faulted the ATP for limited social media promotion of doubles players.

A packed Court No. 2 at Wimbledon has become a focal point in the discussion over ATP plans to reduce doubles draws and prize money. The proposals, part of a restructuring called Product 28, would halve field sizes at several event levels by 2028.

The ATP will experiment with more frequent tennis ball changes during the Lexington Challenger tournament, which begins August 3.

Speaking at the Italian Open, Sabalenka stated that a boycott could occur at some point. The comments come just over two weeks before the French Open amid recent prize adjustments that players have largely dismissed.
