X settles legal dispute with advertising trade group

X Corp. and the World Federation of Advertisers have resolved a lawsuit over alleged advertiser boycotts of the social media platform. The agreement ends litigation that began in 2024 and resets the relationship between the two sides.

X Corp. sued the World Federation of Advertisers and several members in 2024. The company accused them of an illegal boycott that withheld billions of dollars in advertising revenue over concerns about content moderation on the platform.

A judge dismissed the case earlier this year after finding that X could not prove harm under competition laws. X appealed the ruling but has now withdrawn its claims as part of the settlement.

The dispute centered on the Global Alliance for Responsible Media, an initiative started in 2019 to address digital safety issues. The alliance was wound down shortly after the lawsuit was filed. Under the settlement, the World Federation of Advertisers has agreed not to revive the group or create a similar one.

In a joint statement, the parties said the deal resets their relationship. "WFA reiterates its commitment to freedom of speech, a principle first included in WFA's founding constitution back in 1953, and a principle it shares with X," the statement reads.
