YouTube mutes mobile notifications from inactive channels

YouTube has begun muting push notifications on mobile devices from subscribed channels that users have not engaged with for at least a month. The change applies to channels with notifications set to 'all' and aims to reduce clutter while keeping alerts available in the app. Infrequent uploaders remain unaffected.

YouTube rolled out the update on April 21, starting with a feature tested earlier this year. The company hopes to prevent users from disabling notifications entirely due to overload, which could reduce platform engagement and revenue. Push alerts to mobile devices will stop for non-interacted channels, but notifications persist in the app's bell icon inbox for subscribed users who have opted for all alerts. YouTube noted that channels uploading infrequently will continue sending push notifications as before. This protects creators of long-form content from losing visibility with rare uploads. Users who resume watching such channels may see notifications restart, though details remain unclear. The adjustment targets notification fatigue without altering alerts for actively watched channels.

YouTube has increased prices for its Premium service in the United States for the first time since 2023. The individual plan now costs $15.99 a month, up $2, while the family plan rises $4 to $26.99. New subscribers face the hikes immediately, with existing users notified for changes on future billing cycles.

YouTube has introduced a feature in its iOS and Android apps allowing users to disable Shorts completely or set viewing time limits. The Shorts Timer lets parents and users cap sessions at 15, 30, or 45 minutes, or one to two hours, with an option to set it to zero minutes. The tool is rolling out first to supervised accounts before reaching all users.

Google is employing aggressive tactics to encourage subscriptions to YouTube Premium, including the introduction of unskippable 30-second advertisements. These measures are seen by some as potentially pushing users to their limits. The strategy highlights ongoing efforts to convert free users to paid ones.
