HELB issues new guidelines for students updating National ID details on HEF portal

The Higher Education Loans Board has issued guidance to help students who applied for funding as minors update their National ID details on the Higher Education Fund portal after turning 18.

The Higher Education Loans Board has issued fresh guidance to students who applied for higher education funding as minors. The advice explains how they can update their National ID details after turning 18 without creating a new account.

Students who registered using their KCSE index numbers are told to log into their existing HEF account. A pop-up window will prompt them to enter their National ID number and first name exactly as shown on the card before clicking validate.

Once verified, a confirmation pop-up appears and students must click the register tab to finish. HELB has cautioned against creating new accounts and urged students to update existing ones as soon as they receive their National IDs.

The advisory coincides with the proposed Tertiary Placement and Funding Bill 2026 now before Parliament. If passed the bill would create the Tertiary Education Funding Authority to combine the functions of HELB the Universities Fund and the TVET Fund.
