A fire broke out in an industrial building in Östra hamnen in Malmö on Tuesday. The alarm came in at 4:17 p.m., and fire services dispatched four stations to the scene. They encountered smoke-filled premises, with initial reports indicating the fire started in a deep fryer.

The affected company produces food, and the flames spread from a frying room with grease deposits through the ventilation. Joel Johansson, duty officer at the fire service, described the early situation: “It’s burning in some kind of frying room, it’s grease deposits burning and we have smoke and fire spread in the ventilation. It looked like it hadn’t spread initially, but unfortunately it has.” No one was in the building when the fire started, and there was no risk of spread to adjacent structures.

By 6 p.m., fire crews were still on site. Mats Streer, another duty officer, said at the time: “I can’t say it’s under control. We’re right in the middle of this and I can’t say much more.” By 7 p.m., the fire was under control and extinguished. Johnny Krets, alarm officer, explained: “We’re ventilating out the smoke and checking to make sure it hasn’t spread in the structure. We’ll stay for another hour or so.”

Damage included a couple of machines, and a major cleanup will be needed due to the food production. Police were present but suspect no crime.
