Liberals propose digital bans for online child groomers

Equality minister Nina Larsson (L) presented a legislative proposal on Monday for digital bans preventing those convicted of grooming children online from accessing social media.

The Liberals’ proposal aims to bar convicted groomers from platforms such as Instagram and TikTok. Nina Larsson stressed during her visit to Umeå that many people sentenced for these crimes currently face no digital consequences.

– Many who groom children and are convicted of it receive no digital consequences, she said.

The bill would allow police to conduct spot checks and improve follow-up. Larsson described it as an important signal to those who commit crimes against children and young people.

Several cases of online sexual offences have been reported in Umeå over the past year, including charges against an 18-year-old linked to the 764 group involving 77 counts.

The Swedish government has received approval from the EU Commission for a fast-track on a new law forcing social media platforms to remove gang recruitment material within one hour. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described it as the first such legislation in any EU member state. The law targets the recruitment of children into gangs via platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat.

The Swedish government wants to launch an inquiry into AI tools to identify children in online pornographic material, drawing inspiration from Norway. Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) highlights the need for more effective methods against the widespread issue. The tools require legal changes due to data protection rules.
