Man stabs Hawaii boat captain during snorkel tour

A 21-year-old man from Kansas stabbed a 62-year-old boat captain multiple times during a snorkel tour off Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, authorities said. The captain sustained wounds to his abdomen, head, and hands but is in stable condition at a hospital. The suspect faces charges of attempted murder and assault.

On Thursday afternoon, Avery Nissen, 21, from eastern Kansas, allegedly attacked the boat captain with a fillet knife aboard a fishing vessel conducting a three-hour snorkel tour off the coast of Kailua-Kona on Hawaii's Big Island. Other passengers restrained Nissen until the boat returned to Honokōhau Harbor around 3:21 p.m., where police arrested him, the Hawaii Police Department announced Friday. The captain suffered a stab wound to the lower abdomen and numerous cuts to the head and hands. He was taken to a hospital and remains in stable condition. Nissen faces charges of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, and second-degree assault. He is held on $1,570,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in Kona District Court on Monday. Authorities have not identified a motive and are seeking additional information from witnesses.
