Military prosecutor says acid attack on Andrie Yunus stemmed from personal grudge

Jakarta's Military Prosecutor II-07 states the motive behind four TNI soldiers' acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus was a personal grudge. The case has been transferred to Military Court II-08 Jakarta amid protests from advocacy groups. The first hearing is set for April 29.

Four TNI soldiers are accused of dousing KontraS activist Andrie Yunus with sulphuric acid. Colonel Chk Andri Wijaya, head of Jakarta's Military Prosecutor II-07, revealed the motive points to a personal grudge based on examination records. It links to Andrie Yunus intruding a closed meeting on TNI law revisions at a Jakarta hotel in 2025.

"For the motive, up to now, what we have delved into through the Examination Report (BAP), the motive by the defendants is still a personal grudge against Mr. AY," Andri Wijaya said after handing over the case file to Military Court II-08 Jakarta on Thursday (April 16, 2026).

The case file and evidence have been officially transferred, shifting authority to the court. Wijaya stressed the motive is not final and will be tested in trial, with potential further probes if new facts emerge, including other parties' involvement.

The Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) protests the military court handling. YLBHI Chairman Muhamad Isnur criticized the TNI's Pushpom and Military Prosecutor's lack of transparency, ignoring victim rights. "Andrie Yunus as the victim has objected to his case being processed in the military court as it is a den of impunity," Isnur said.
