Rain expected across parts of Ethiopia in next ten days

The Ethiopian Meteorology Institute said light to heavy rain is expected in several parts of the country over the next ten days.

The institute stated that rainfall will expand in amount and distribution across southwest, west, northwest, north and central areas. It noted this will improve soil moisture for crops and plants already sown.

Surface water flow is expected to reach moderate to high levels in the Tekeze, Mereb, Abay, Baro Akobo, Upper and Middle Omo, Gibe Rift Valley and Awash basins. Moderate to moderate flow is forecast for the Upper and Middle Genale Dawa, Wabi Shebele and Ogaden basins.

The institute warned of possible flooding, landslides and river swelling. It advised that precautions be taken in vulnerable areas.

The South African Weather Service has updated its forecast to predict below-normal rainfall in the southwestern and southern coastal parts during winter until August. This drier outlook raises concerns for the winter wheat crop amid rising fuel and fertiliser prices linked to the Iran conflict. Eastern coastal areas may see above-normal rain, heightening flood risks.
