Paramount-Miramax’s Scary Movie 6 is heading toward a franchise-best domestic opening of $52.7 million this weekend. The comedy sequel features the return of Anna Faris, Regina Hall and the Wayans brothers.
The film earned $23.5 million from its first Friday and previews at 3,490 theaters. It marks a comeback for the Wayans brothers, who last worked on the franchise with Scary Movie 2 in 2001. Anna Faris, who reprises her role as Cindy Campbell, recently reflected on the original 2000 film. She said Neve Campbell was “so lovely” after meeting her at an audition and that Jennifer Love Hewitt sent her flowers. Faris added that the cast felt the movie was “so ridiculous” that the actors being spoofed would not take offense. The sixth entry again parodies the Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer franchises. Social media reaction has been positive, with nostalgia cited as a key driver. The movie holds a 30 percent critics score and 69 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
