SSAB halts all work in Luleå after three illness cases

SSAB has stopped all work on its new steel mill construction in Luleå after three people sought medical care due to suspected toxic gas exposure. Earlier tests revealed elevated levels in machine cabins, with new cases reported on Good Friday. Region Norrbotten confirms two of the affected remain at the emergency department.

SSAB had previously halted work on part of the Luleå site after employees reported nausea and headaches. On Thursday, test results confirmed elevated levels of toxic gas in the cabins of machines at the new steel mill construction area.

On Good Friday, a new case was first reported involving a person working outside the previously stopped zone, prompting SSAB to suspend all work on the project.

At around 22:00, Region Norrbotten announced two additional cases. The first affected person was discharged from the hospital, while the two most recent remain at the emergency department, according to the region.
