A 20-year-old Corpus Christi man is in custody after allegedly shooting and killing his father inside the family home on July 13. Markus Xavier Benavidez faces one count of murder in the death of 47-year-old Markus Benavidez.
Police responded to a 911 call around 11:30 p.m. on July 13 at a residence on Greenwich Drive. Officers found the younger Benavidez standing outside and took him into custody after holding him at gunpoint.
The victim was discovered lying on a bed with a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to an affidavit, the victim's wife told police her son had been experiencing hallucinations and drug withdrawal symptoms after a recent hospitalization. She said she called a crisis hotline about an hour before the shooting.
The defendant allegedly told officers, "I did what I did," while being placed in a patrol car. He is being held without bond in the Nueces County Jail as the investigation continues.
