Trinamool names Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as opposition leader

The Trinamool Congress nominated Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly on May 9, 2026. The party also appointed Firhad Hakim as Chief Whip and named two deputy leaders.

The Trinamool Congress on May 9, 2026, selected senior leader and Ballygunge MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, aged 82, as Leader of Opposition. He previously served as State Minister of Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs.

A party statement issued by Abhishek Banerjee also named Asima Patra and Nayna Bandyopadhya as deputy leaders of the opposition. Firhad Hakim, Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, was appointed Chief Whip.

Mamata Banerjee, who lost her Bhabanipur seat, will not sit in the House. She stated that the party will remain a strong, vocal and uncompromising opposition in both Delhi and West Bengal.

The BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member assembly.
