Trinamool ernennt Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay zum Oppositionsführer

Der Trinamool Congress nominierte am 9. Mai 2026 Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay als Oppositionsführer in der 18. gesetzgebenden Versammlung von Westbengalen. Die Partei ernannte zudem Firhad Hakim zum parlamentarischen Geschäftsführer (Chief Whip) und berief zwei stellvertretende Fraktionsvorsitzende.

Der Trinamool Congress wählte am 9. Mai 2026 den erfahrenen Politiker und Abgeordneten für Ballygunge, den 82-jährigen Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay, zum Oppositionsführer. Er war zuvor als Staatsminister für Landwirtschaft und parlamentarische Angelegenheiten tätig.

In einer von Abhishek Banerjee veröffentlichten Parteierklärung wurden zudem Asima Patra und Nayna Bandyopadhya als stellvertretende Oppositionsführerinnen benannt. Firhad Hakim, Bürgermeister der Kolkata Municipal Corporation, wurde zum parlamentarischen Geschäftsführer ernannt.

Mamata Banerjee, die ihren Sitz in Bhabanipur verloren hat, wird dem Parlament nicht angehören. Sie erklärte, die Partei werde sowohl in Delhi als auch in Westbengalen eine starke, laute und kompromisslose Opposition bleiben.

Die BJP sicherte sich 207 der 294 Sitze in der Versammlung.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee filed her nomination papers from the Bhabanipur constituency on April 8, 2026, as the Trinamool Congress candidate, setting up a direct contest with BJP's Suvendu Adhikari for the assembly elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party released its first list of 144 candidates for West Bengal assembly elections, fielding Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhawanipore seat as well as Nandigram. Adhikari defeated Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021 by 1,956 votes. He claimed he would win both seats.
