West Virginia man charged with strangling girlfriend over headlamp

A 48-year-old man in Preston County faces felony charges after allegedly attacking his girlfriend during an argument over a missing headlamp. The woman escaped by fleeing into nearby woods and later reported the incident to state police.

Frank Victor Calvert Jr. was arrested last Friday and booked into the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on $75,000 bail. He is charged with felony strangulation in connection with the June 14 incident.

According to a police report, the woman told troopers that Calvert struck her in the face, pulled out some of her hair, and placed her in a chokehold after she could not locate the headlamp. She said he also squeezed her recently injured arm during the confrontation at a home on Ash Pole Road.

The woman, who had previously obtained a domestic violence protective order against Calvert, managed to crawl outside and reach a neighbor's house. Officers noted red marks on her face and neck along with bruising near her collarbone.
