On Thursday evening, a woman driving on Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee, pulled her vehicle to the side of the road after it broke down. She activated her hazard lights and stepped outside, according to the Memphis Police Department. At around 9 p.m., Daniel Thomas, 67, crashed his Honda Pilot into her car and then struck the woman, authorities said. Police pronounced her dead at the scene, though her name has not been released. Shelby County court records show Thomas charged with vehicular homicide, along with misdemeanor counts of DUI, reckless driving, public intoxication, and driving without a license. Officers noted that Thomas smelled of alcohol and admitted to consuming multiple drinks. He performed poorly on a field sobriety test and later tested positive for 1.6 grams of THC in a blood draw at a hospital, police reported. Thomas was arrested and booked into jail. He is set for arraignment on Monday, with a bail review scheduled for the following day.
