Egypt and Kenya deepen health and pharmaceutical cooperation at Nairobi summit

Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met Kenyan Health Minister Aden Bare Duale on the sidelines of the Global Health Summit in Nairobi to explore expanding cooperation in healthcare and pharmaceuticals. Discussions focused on transferring Egyptian expertise and fast-tracking pending strategic agreements. The initiative underscores Egypt's commitment to continental health security.

Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt's Health Minister, led the official Egyptian delegation at the Global Health Summit in Nairobi. The summit addresses digital health transformation, pandemic preparedness, and strengthening health systems across Africa, according to Egypt's health ministry.

In a meeting with Kenyan Health Minister Aden Bare Duale, both sides reaffirmed Egypt's support for developing Kenya's healthcare system. They discussed transferring Egypt's expertise in eliminating hepatitis C and advancing cancer treatment, alongside supporting Kenya's push for universal health coverage.

The ministers reviewed two proposed memorandums of understanding. The first targets developing the healthcare workforce and transferring pharmaceutical technology to position Kenya as a regional hub for Egyptian pharmaceuticals in East Africa. The second involves cooperation between Nasser Institute and Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital to establish Kenya's first bone marrow transplant unit, while expanding telemedicine and cancer screening programs.

They highlighted the Coptic Hospital in Nairobi, supported by Egyptian medical teams, as a successful model of health diplomacy. The countries agreed to form joint technical committees to speed up pharmaceutical registration and encourage Egyptian private-sector investment in Kenya's healthcare infrastructure, including hospital management and diagnostic centers. This aligns with Egypt's strategy to enhance partnerships across Africa.
